What is Watson Build?

IBM’s Watson Build is a global initiative designed to accelerate Business Partners’ adoption of Watson and encourage the development of AI solutions on IBM Cloud. Through the initiative, partners will get the opportunity to work with IBM experts, access to rich learning resources, and receive Watson and Cloud services credits to apply to their build.

What are the goals of the initiative?

Through Watson Build, IBM’s goals are to help partners:

  • Dream up an AI concept that leverage their IP and create a business plan detailing the solution strategy.
  • Build a prototype on IBM Cloud with the support of technology credits and IBM technical expertise. Plus, partners will have the opportunity to pitch their solution to be named a Watson Build Geography Champion!
  • Showcase their solution in front of industry leaders and more at IBM PartnerWorld 2019.

Where is this initiative geographically available? Are there special geographical considerations?

Watson Build is available in all geographies. For the purposes of Watson Build, geography is defined as seven (7) geographic regions: Asia Pacific, Europe, Greater China Group, Japan, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, and North America.

IBM has formed relationships known as Joint Alliances with several companies to exclusively market Watson Solutions in designated countries. What are the intellectual property requirements?

  • The Business Partner warrants that all IP is original and wholly owned by the submitting entity; that all copyright, trademarks, design rights, patent and other intellectual property rights (registered and unregistered) belong to the submitting entity. Any technology used that is not original must be comprised of source code that anyone can inspect, modify, enhance, distribute, and not subject to licensing restrictions. The Business Partner may be asked to provide proof of IP at any time during the initiative.
  • All information in whatever form provided by the Business Partner pursuant to Watson Build shall be considered proprietary to the Business Partner. IBM does not own any of the information submitted. IBM shall have no liability to Business Partners in relation to any and all aspects of Watson Build including, but not limited to, its use or otherwise of information provided by the Business Partner.

What is the process for a partner to terminate its participation in the initiative?

To terminate participation in the initiative, send your request in writing to bpbuild@us.ibm.com to confirm your desire to terminate participation. All technology credits left as part of the program will be forfeited.

How is Call for Code different than Watson Build 2018?

Watson build is a multi-phase challenge for IBM Business Partners. The program is designed for Business Partners to dream up an AI concept, create a business plan, and build a solution on IBM Cloud leveraging at minimum 1 (one) Watson API. The solutions will solve a unique client challenge in any industry. Call for Code is open to everyone, and is a 3-month initiative for developers to build sustainable disaster preparedness solutions with a focus on health and well-being.

Eligibility

Am I eligible to participate?

IBM Business Partners must be participants in the IBM PartnerWorld Program (Registered, Silver, Gold or Platinum) to be eligible for this initiative. Business Partners who are not members of PartnerWorld can easily and at no cost join the IBM PartnerWorld Program. Join PartnerWorld.

If I participated in Watson Build 2017, am I eligible to participate in 2018?

  • Business Partners who participated in Watson Build 2017 and advanced to Phase 2 (Build) are eligible to participate in the 2018 Initiative with a net new solution which addresses a different business problem. Business Partners that advanced to Phase 2 (Build) in 2017 may not submit the same solution.
  • Business Partners who participated in Watson Build 2017 and did not advance to Phase 2 (Build) may participate in 2018 with the same business plan, an improved plan for the same or similar solution, or a new business plan for a net new solution.

What are the rules for Government Entities?

Government Entities, as determined by IBM, are responsible to confirm their participation and confirm their ability to accept the benefits received during this initiative will not violate any local laws, rules, regulations or the internal rules and regulations of their company. Such confirmation must be provided as requested by IBM.

If my firm is participating in Call for Code or the Challenge Accepted: Blockchain for Good developer challenge in partnership with Global Citizen, are we eligible to participate in Watson Build 2018?

Yes, as long as you meet the criteria.

Requirements

What are the requirements for Think (Phase 1)?

  • Business Partners must develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based concept and create a business plan around that idea. All concepts must be for embedded technology, leveraging at least one (1) Watson API and developed on IBM Cloud. Business plans are due on July 17, 2018 at 5 PM EST.
  • Business plans will be evaluated by a panel of judges identified by IBM. A limited number of finalists will be selected by a judging panel to advance to Phase 2 (Build).
  • A business partner may submit 1 (one) business plan.
  • If your company is multinational, each IBM CEID (Country Enterprise ID) may submit (1) one business plan to Watson Build.

If my company is a multinational organization, may our company submit more than (1) one business plan?

Each IBM CEID (Country Enterprise ID) may submit (1) one business plan to Watson Build. If multiple business plans are submitted with the same CEID, the Watson Build team will accept the business plan that was submitted first by timestamp.

What are the requirements for Build (Phase 2)?

  • In Phase 2, selected Business Partners build a working prototype of the solution described in the business plan from Phase 1. The prototype must include at least 1 (one) Watson API and must be developed on IBM Cloud. Prototypes are due on November 6, 2018 at 5PM EST.
  • IBM will only accept and promote solutions on IBM Cloud. Solutions that are developed or being developed prior to the start of Watson Build are eligible for submission however if the solution does not currently function on IBM Cloud, all data must be migrated to the IBM Cloud platform.
  • Each Business Partner firm may submit 1 (one) business plan for review. If approved, each Business Partner firm may receive 1 (one) IBM technology credits offer.
  • At the start of Phase 2, eligible Business Partners will receive information on how to claim their exclusive Watson Build offer. To ensure all Business Partners participating in Phase 2 have adequate time to build their prototypes, it is required that Business Partners claim their exclusive Watson Build offer and setup their IBM Cloud account by September 13, 2018 at 5PM EST.

What is a Geography Championship?

All seven (7) Geographies will host a local Geography Championship in November 2018. At the Geography Championships, Business Partners will present their prototypes in front of a panel of judges. One (1) Business Partner from each Geography will be named a Watson Build Geography Champion and will advance to the Global Championship in February 2019.

What are the requirements to participate in a Geography Championship?

Any Business Partner participating in Watson Build that submits an eligible, technically validated AI-solution may participate in their local Geography Championship. Technical experts will review solutions once they have been submitted to validate the prototype functions as described. Partners will be notified if their solution is eligible to advance to the Geography Championships.

Will I have to travel for the Geography Championship?

Some Business Partners may need to travel to participate in the Geography Championship. The locations will be communicated well in advance so partners can make the necessary travel arrangements.

What is the Showcase?

The Showcase is an opportunity for Business Partners to promote their solution and get visibility and notoriety in front of industry experts and thought leaders at the 2019 PartnerWorld Conference.

  • Participation in the Watson Build 2018 Showcase is by application only and is only open to Watson Build 2018 participants who completed Phase 1 and Phase 2.
  • Eligible Business Partners can apply to participate in the Watson Build Showcase at the 2019 PartnerWorld Conference. A Worldwide panel of IBM selected judges will review the submitted applications and choose a select number of Business Partners to join the Showcase. Applications to participate in the Showcase must include the Phase 2 working prototype and supporting materials and must be received by IBM before November 6, 2018 at 5PM EST (New York).

What is the Global Championship and how do I participate?

The Global Championship is the final event where the seven (7) Geography Champions will pitch their solutions to a panel of Worldwide judges for the chance to be named the Watson Build 2018 Global Champion. The Global Championship will take place in February 2019.

What do the Geography Champions get for advancing?

The seven (7) Geography Champions will receive a Watson Build 2018 Geography Champion business mark, as well as two (2) complimentary passes to PartnerWorld 2019, and two (2) complimentary hotel rooms for 3-nights while at the PartnerWorld conference. Additionally, Geography Champions are guranteed a spot in the Showcase at PartnerWorld 2019.

What does the Global Champion get for advancing?

The Global Champion will receive all Geography Champion benefits, as well as a Watson Build 2018 Global Champion business mark and trophy.

What do the Showcase participants get for advancing?

Each Showcase firm will receive one (1) complimentary pass to PartnerWorld 2019. Geography Champions are only eligible for the two (2) complimentary passes to PartnerWorld 2019 as part of their winner package.

What do I get when I participate in Watson Build?

Each phase offers different benefits. In Phase 1 (Think), Business Partners will receive the Watson Build Business Plan template, learning resources, and online workshop modules.

In Phase 2 (Build), Business Partners will receive IBM Watson and Cloud services credits, Cloud support, developer code patterns, and the opportunity to compete in a Geography Championship. All seven (7) Geography Champions will advance to the Global Championship in February 2019.

Showcase: selected Business Partners will showcase their solution in front of industry leaders at IBM PartnerWorld 2019. Showcase partners will receive visibility at the Showcase, one (1) complimentary PartnerWorld 2019 conference pass, and a toolkit to help partners promote their solution.

When will I get the Cloud and Watson services credits? What are the requirements?

At the start of Phase 2, eligible Business Partners will receive information on how to claim their exclusive Watson Build offer. There will be instructions on how to setup an IBM Cloud account and access the $7,000 Cloud and Watson services credits.

To ensure all Business Partners participating in Phase 2 have adequate time to build their prototypes, it is required that Business Partners claim their exclusive Watson Build offer and setup their IBM Cloud account by September 13, 2018 at 5PM EST.

Once a Business Partner depletes the IBM technology credits they will be asked to fund accounts independently. Business Partners will be asked to provide a credit card upon setting-up their Cloud account or at the time all IBM technology credits are depleted. IBM will provide ample notice and continued follow-up with a Business Partner once they get close to depleting their IBM technology credits allotment.

Nurture

What if I do not advance to a certain phase.

Business Partners that do not advance to a certain phase will still have access to the exclusive Watson Build content and self-service resources to continue their progress.

What if I do not submit a prototype?

Business Partners that do not submit a prototype still have access to the exclusive Watson Build content and resources to continue development on the IBM Cloud platform. Those partners that do not submit a solution are no longer eligible for the Geography Championship, Global Championship, or Showcase.

What if I am not a Geography Champion?

Any Business Partner that is not a Geography Champion, but that did submit an eligible prototype may apply to the Showcase. If a partner decides not to apply to the Showcase they will still have acess to the exclusive Watson Build content and resources to continue development on the IBM Cloud platform.

What if I do not participate in the Showcase?

The Showcase is completely optional. Business Partners that do not participate in the Showcase will still have acess to the exclusive Watson Build content and resources to continue development on the IBM Cloud platform.
