Opto 22 customers use our products to monitor, control, and get data from machines and devices that are essential to their business. Examples of machines, devices and assets are:

- sensors, actuators (valves, motor starters, pilot lights, etc.) and instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow, etc.)

- pumps, tanks, motors, compressors, etc.

- machinery, systems & processes (e.g. HVAC, plastic injection molding, metal processing, industrial furnaces, power distribution systems, food processing, packaging machinery, Oil & Gas machinery, brewing & distillation processes, energy systems, etc.).

You can find many interesting examples on the Opto 22 Video Case Studies page.

groov EPIC is a modular system. I/O (input/output) modules make the electrical connections to the "things" in the IoT and IIoT. The controller is programmed to provide "edge processing". Data can also be exchanged with IBM Watson IoT using Node-Red.

groov EPIC from Opto 22 and IBM Bluemix are the perfect combination to deploy in industrial IoT applications for increased business intelligence and actionable information in industrial, commercial, and institutional applications.

  • Functional details

Opto 22's groov EPIC is an integrated system of hardware and software for industrial control, remote monitoring, data acquisition, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

    • Make the physical, wired connection to electrical signals via input/output (I/O) modules
    • Data acquisition in real-time (seconds, milliseconds)
    • Edge processing via programmable automation control
    • Format and exchange data with other plant floor, business or cloud systems & platforms
    • Create a simple Graphical User Interface that can be viewed on the integrated touchscreen or from any mobile device or browser

  • Business problem

As a result of the purpose-built, application-specific nature of manufacturing and automation systems, the vast majority of devices found on the plant floor today use custom and often proprietary protocols & software. This is a hurdle in accessing the data required to realize the benefits IoT offers. The problem solved is the lack of interoperability between OT (Operational Technology) and Information Technology (IT) systems.

  • Business opportunity

The IBM Watson IoT platform provides a tremendous opportunity for increased business intelligence and actionable information with its data analytics capabilities.  That data, though, has to come from somewhere.  groov EPIC provides that connectivity and edge-processing to real-world industrial assets, processes, machines, and devices.

The opportunity is for customers and prospects looking to implement IoT solutions for these reasons, the combination of IBM Watson and Opto 22's groov EPIC provides an end-to-end solution.

A use case for Opto 22 and IBM Watson IoT would be groov EPIC connected to and controlling the equipment in an industrial facility. Node Red would interface with the groov EPIC, and in turn exchange data with Bluemix via Watson Nodes.  The tools in Watson would be used for data acquisition, logging, visualization, dashboards and analytics.  The value proposition is the client could optimize machine life, do predictive maintenance, control costs, maximize up-time, and measure OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).

  • Return on investment

The return on investment is the reduced costs (and increased profits) that result from increased operational efficiencies. These efficiebcues would vary by industry and application. For example,

    In manufacturing or industrial process:

    • availability rate
    • performance rate
    • quality rate

    In commercial or institutional buildings:

    • Energy efficiency
    • Demand side Management

    With OEM and Machine Builders

    • Remote Monitoring/Troubleshooting
    • Asset usage optimization
    • Preventative or predictive maintenance

  • Competitive advantage

    • Efficient I/O scanning and processing
    • Tightly integrated hardware and software
    • Open, modular and scalable architecture
    • De-facto standards for communication
