  • Functional details

Visual COBOL is a family of COBOL development tools for the next generation of COBOL applications. Based around a choice of Visual Studio or Eclipse IDEs, it includes options for development and deployment of COBOL applications as native code, .NET and JVM on Windows, UNIX and Linux, Docker containers and for deployment to the Cloud. The latest release includes hundreds of enhancements based on customer requests designed to make it easier for Micro Focus Net Express and Server Express users to upgrade their applications to Visual COBOL.

  • Business problem

We quickly established that re-purposing what we had in respect of our core IP and application assets was 60% more cost-effective than rewriting or replacing existing programs..  Mauro Cancellieri,
    Director,  Romao Calcados

  • Business opportunity

    * Future proof business-critical applications Visual COBOL makes it possible to create and continue to develop enterprise class business-critical applications that run on the widest range of platforms. This means that existing applications can be deployed onto new platforms, including .NET, JVM and the cloud, maintaining and extending existing investments, as well as presenting new market opportunities. * Increase developer productivity Visual COBOL’s integration capability with Eclipse significantly increases developer productivity by exploiting Eclipse tools, improving time-to-market for new products and capabilities. * Protect existing investment and intellectual property Existing COBOL applications have extensive business logic built into them, which contains valuable competitive advantage. Being able to use these applications in new environments for decades to come ensures that both investment and market opportunity are maximized. Applications developed in Visual COBOL are deployed on the COBOL Server deployment environment.

  • Return on investment

    • Reduce risk through reuse of existing COBOL and legacy code, and skills
    • Gain agility by extending reused assets to the internet or SOA
    • Accelerate time to market by leveraging existing investment
    • Increase productivity with contemporary development environment

Create contemporary graphical or web user interface Extends core business assets to the internet and new business channels Integrates COBOL applications with J2EE and .NET. Leverages COBOL business processes as services in an SOA. Cuts the time taken to build, extend and maintain applications. Facilitates B2B and B2C transactions using XML.

  • Competitive advantage

Increase flexibility and future-proof business assets, as COBOL applications can run on any Linux, UNIX or Windows server to simplify business process integration demands.  The latest versions of Visual COBOL support COBOL deployment to Docker.
