BCV5 provides for fast duplication or migration of DB2 databases and tables for DB2 under z/OS. The objects can be copied within the same DB2 subsystem or to another system. The chief difference to the way traditional methods/tools work is, that BCV5 does not operate "row-wise", but copies table- and indexspaces entirely, as VSAM Linear Datasets. To provide for minimal restriction in the source objects’ availability and in order to save processing time and computer resources BCV5 uses its own internal, high efficiency copy utility. It is as well capable to deploy Advanced Copy Services like Flashcopy V2, DFSMSdss COPY or IDCAMS. Supplementary there are functions to automatically translate the object-ids and adapt RBA/LRSN. BCV5 internally uses multi-threading or allows for parallel processing via generation and execution of simultaneously executing jobs.

Standard methods based on Unload/Load or DSN1COPY demand from users to care about the DDL. That means, before copying/migrating data the user must create or adjust the objects at the target. Different with BCV5, the tool creates or adjusts the DDL. Users just select objects to be copied or migrated and optionally specify renaming patterns. BCV5 offers an integrated process for “copying DB2 data”, fast and efficient. It yet transfers runstats information for the migrated objects, so that the objects are ready for use at the target. It currently supports DB2 for z/OS, Version 8 to 12.

  • Business problem

    Most z/OS users gather test data from production, viz copy it from production to test and development environments. Presently used unload/load based procedures are slow and expensive.

    In order to improve quality assurance z/OS data centers tend to enlarge their test environments to allow better regression, integration and performance tests. Huge amounts of test data must be provided, hence moved.

  • Business opportunity

    Disk storage has changed rapidly over the past few years with the delivery of new functions and improved performance. DB2 has made many changes to keep pace and make use of the disk improvements (DS8000) and Advanced Copy Services (Flashcopy). Several features lead to improved synergy in recent versions up to DB2 for z/OS Version 12.

    BCV5 adds further functionality and benefits to the combined deployment of DB2, DS8000 and Flashcopy V2, namely in the area of bulk data movement. The tool applies Flashcopy V2 to DB2 database and/or table migration. It allows for a more than 10 times faster processing than unload/reload based processes, whereas the same time resource consumption is diminished by 90 percent. In particular companies which are about to introduce additional integration levels or already maintain quality assurance environments will benefit significantly. BCV5 facilitates cheaper and faster provision of fresh test data.

    Whereas 'plain' VSAM and sequential datasets, hence IMS datasets, simply can be copied through specification of input and output datasets, is this not feasible with DB2 data, due to things like VCAT, DB2 Catalog, OBIDs, RBAs, or LRSNs. BCV5 closes this gap. It brings, in respect of data movement, the power of Flashcopy and DS8000 to DB2. Flashcopy and DS8000 offer maximum benefit when fully deployed for DB2, the most important and seminal sector of z/OS.

  • Return on investment

    Deployment of BCV5 creates one of the rare situations where the return on investment can directly taken from the job listings. The job listings of copy jobs (indeed of any job) display CPU time and/or system service units consumed. The savings with BCV5 are 90%. Usually BCV5 pays for itself in a few months. The larger the amount of data the faster the return. Other benefits in money's worth are dramatically reduced execution time, avoidance of subsequent jobs like RUNSTATs, coexistence with other workload, and last but not least significantly less manual preparation work, usually again 90%.

  • Competitive advantage

    Data movements based on row-wise operations like unload/load based procedures waste copy time and resources (CPU time, SSU). BCV5 reduces both significantly. Example: a 10-hour-process is shortened to a 1 hour process, or even better. Resource consumption is also reduced to a tenth, which means, that copy work can coexist with other workload. It is not longer necessary to postpone bulk copies to particular weekends.

    Instead of unloading and loading tablespaces BCV5 inter alia copies the pagesets. This is rather similar to what DSN1COPY does. But, DSN1COPY doesn't handle DDL i.e. does not create or adjust objects, doesn't transfer RUNSTATs, etc., it requires considerable preparation work, and it has no multi-thread feature.
